Three Opportunities in Australian Photonics

Updated: Sep 14
Australia may not be the world’s largest photonics market, but it has several areas where advanced optical and laser technologies can create meaningful value. Australian photonics opportunities are particularly strong where advanced technologies can address specialised industrial, research and sensing applications.
From my perspective, three opportunities are particularly worth watching:
1. Advanced sensing
Photonics technologies can support applications in environmental monitoring, mining, infrastructure inspection, defence, and remote sensing.
2. Research-to-industry collaboration
Australia has strong capabilities in university research and scientific innovation. The opportunity lies in helping promising technologies move from laboratories into practical industrial applications.
3. Specialized photonics supply chains
Many Australian projects require precision optical components, laser technologies, and customized solutions that may not be readily available locally.
This creates opportunities for reliable international manufacturing, technical collaboration, and long-term supply partnerships.
I would be interested to hear which areas others see as the strongest opportunities for photonics in Australia.
